Cozumel

There is nothing quite like the charm of a Mexican beach town. But when you surround it with the crystal blue waters of the Caribbean, the sight becomes something of a fantasy. Cozy and quaint, Cozumel is the perfect retreat for families, scuba lovers and honeymooners. No wonders it´s a port of call for all major cruises lines sailing the Caribbean.

This beautiful 32 mile long and 9 mile wide island is the largest in Mexico. In the Mayan language, Cozumel means the Land of the Swallows.

Originally home to the Maya, the island was first visited by Europeans in May of 1518, which led to the beginning of the conquest of Mexico in 1519. The Spanish moved on to the mainland, leaving Cozumel and the Mayan ruins that still stand today to the pirates.

Captain Jean Lafitte was known to visit the island, reportedly leaving buried treasures. During World War II, the United States built an air base here, from which planes searched the waters for German warships. It was the military frogmen of this period who discovered one of the real treasure of Cozumel; the magnificent reef formation.
